What Would You Do if You Were President for a Week?

September 4, 2012 15 Comments

We’ve all had this fantasy: becoming president, being in charge, calling the shots. I’ve always been very curious about what non-politicians like you and me would do if we actually were president. So I decided to do a contest and give away 10 autographed copies of my book The Internet Marketing Bible.

This is how it works:

  1. Post a comment explaining three things you’d do if you were president for a week
  2. We’ll pre-select 20 finalists and we’ll post all their ideas to our Facebook page
  3. Our fans will select the 10 winners
  4. We’ll contact the winners and we’ll ask them for their mailing addresses so we can send them a copy of my book
OK, enough rules already. I want to hear what you have to say. What are the 3 things you would do if you were president for a week?

  1. 1. Change the definition of what a US corporation is. This will encompass responsibility for ethics, environmental impact, executive compensation, and civic growth.

2.Reduce Military spending by 40% over 5 years.

    3. Change the methods we use to teach our kids and teachers compensation, Get rid of Tenure or modify it.

  2. 1. Reduce government spending starting with the repeal of Obamacare, reducing foreign aid, and no further funding of failing businesses like Solyndra.

    2. Cut taxes across the board for all taxpayers and corporations. Families will have more of their own money to spend and business will have more capital to expand and hire.

    3. Secure our borders and enforce current immigration laws.

  3. To grow jobs fast – especially at smaller companies:

    1. Eliminate the employer mandate from the Affordable Care Act (aka Obama Care) – not the individual mandate

    2. Eliminate the employer portion of payroll taxes (FICA)

    3. Give Green Cards to foreign nationals who earn graduate and PhD degrees in Math, Science and Engineering so we get the world’s smartest people to work here

  4. Years ago I sold health insurance for a while, and I would “fix” a big part of what’s wrong with insurance rates by removing the state line boundaries for providing health insurance.

The rate difference for a family of four who lives in in Vancouver WA vs. Portland OR (only across the river) would make you cringe.

The inability for insurance companies to compete across 50 different state lines is completely idiotic and makes no sense, keeping prices needlessly and artificially high.

Also, rather than mandating that everyone buy health insurance, I’d make the premiums 100% tax deductable, because i believe incentives work better than regulation.

Finally, forcing insurance companies to accept all comers with no right to exclude pre-existing conditions is the way to kill the insurance business entirely, and drive everyone elses cost WAY up.

Under the same “but its not fair…” rationale that removes the preexisting conditions right to exclusion, then why not force companies to extend auto insurance at the same rate to everyone regardless of age and driving record? Because it’s stupid, that’s why.

  5. If President, I would:
    1. Stop all contributions to politicians till Congress solves the budget problems.
    2. Change the budgeting process that allows taxpayers to know how budgets change in real terms, not adjusted for inflation.
    3. Have all politicians use the same terms in their analytic terms. The would use real dollars and not percentages so that taxpayers would be knowledgeable about the increases in the budget process.

  6. 1. I would repeal the Obamacare. I believe in preventive medicine and a healthy outlook and why would I help in paying for someone’s abuse if they had smoked or drank heavily or didn’t make efforts to loose weight when asked by their doctor? People need to start taking responsibility for themselves in this great country. I would start in the schools and mandatory health screening, health insurance, and teaching of taking care of yourselves and being responsibile in everything that you do. Carry your photo identity card with that statement and continue throughout their school years. You would see a drastic change in happiness and people taking more responsibility to their health.

    2. Redesign the tax structure; especially for the middle class working families. They have to sacrifice alot to have food on their plates and raising up children and also childcare costs. They are the largest working class in America.

    3. Reduce wars. Instill nations to start actively improving their own country and have people work on what needs are to be met in their own country. Get back to redesigning for a better world as it was intended for all of us to be. Maybe you have to start from the beginning foundation and build back up.

  7. 1) I would give citizenship to anyone who starts a business and creates at least 5 jobs after one year.

    2) I would eliminate 90% of subsidies and tax breaks, then lower the marginal rate of corporation tax to 25% or less.

    3) I would introduce a system which makes it incredibly easy to switch bank accounts, so that banks have to work harder to provide a quality service consumer a.k.a society.

  8. If I were president for a week:

    1) I would create a program, which not only took in the homeless in the United States, but also created a extremely efficacious routine for the homeless that would allow for them to go through a intensive rehab that actually gets them to quit their habits and enter the work force even if it means starting at the minimum wage. The problem with a lot of the homeless in this country is that they have addictions like alcohol, drugs, have a mental illness, etc. and that is what continues to haunt/destroy their lives, so we need to create a better program that helps them and then puts them on the right track. “As many as 3.5 million people experience homelessness in a given year (1% of the entire U.S. population or 10% of its poor),”

    2) I would pull us out of all foreign wars and put the money we were going to use on war into foreign aid to create ALLIES instead of enemies.

    3) I would work on creating a better economic infrastructure that is focused on CREATING JOBS=putting food on the table and keeping people in their homes. I would protect our jobs by creating tariffs and potentially embargo certain countries that are economically bullying us in certain sectors (China with manufacturing, the Middle East with oil). This would also ease our dependance on foreign products, oil, etc.

  9. Okay, my turn to share the ideas:

    1. I would announce that all the sales tax income collected during this week would be donated to charity (poverty) so that the entrepreneurs and business owners have a deep spiritual motivation to generate as much income as possible in order to support the issue. This would be the test of human’s inner need for helping other people tightly linked with entrepreneurship which is the main reason human race can keep moving forward.

    2. I would hire best movies staff to record a film about how the government works from inside and how the money is really being spent so that people can have a clear perspective about where their tax money is going.

    3. I would try to make an atmosphere a little bit less stiff and serious inside of the government. I deeply believe that true smile stimulates creativity and brings powerful solutions to minds. This may be a miracle for the country struggling with recession on all the layers.

  10. 1. Lead the people to destroy the party divide. Help people to see that we are all working for the same things. We are all human after all.
    2. Instill inspiration in individuals, the same type of inspiration that lead Dr. King and Ghandi to promote change.
    3. Honor people and give them the power to lead their own change, allowing those to take charge of their own domains.

  11. PRESIDENT FOR A WEEK
    1) Bring all members of Congress together for training on “Fierce Conversations.” Ban the media for the week, until the final day. The members can then speak only about what is different than it was on Monday.
    2) Bring in the top 50 experts in Lean Government. Have them spend 2 days working with the top levels of every Federal Bureau, setting up Lean and Continuous Improvement implementations.
    3) Introduce a bill for 12 year term limits for both houses with no lobbying careers afterwards.

  12. The First 3 Things I would Do As President:

    1) Hire a competent and knowledgeable cabinet who have shown success in their respective fields.

    2) Change the US to the Metric system

    3) Set Up a more fair and open voting system. The current Electoral system forces the two party rivalry and better systems exist which would allow for more parties and more votes to be heard.

  13. Congressional Reform Act of 2012

    1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no
pay when they’re out of office.

    2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social
    Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the
Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into
the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the
American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

    3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all
    Americans do.

    4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

    5. Congress loses their current health care system and
participates in the same health care system as the American people.

    6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the
    American people.

    7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void
effective 12/1/12. The American people did not make this
    contract with Congressmen/women.
